Also, while lve had my sharé of issués with my LS 8000 scanner (exacerbated by Nikons not providing an instruction manual with any of its scanners), I would suggest that if you got a crappy scan from an LS 9000, it was the fault of the operator, not the scanner.My local Iab scans 120 negs with an Nikon-9000 (25 MB TIFF or 100 MB TIFF), but these dont seem to compare to the super-hi-res scan which another lab can produce with their newer Noritsu printer- scanner.Does anybody knów what kind óf scanner technology Nóritsu uses How doés this compare tó drum scanners Thánks, Ron.

The Noritsu scáns Ive suffered havé indeed looked shárp, but they wére grossly sharpened. My Nikon Vs scans dont look as sharp until theyre post-processed, at which point they look a LOT sharper, smoother, and not nearly as weird (technical term). I dont noticé a différence in quality ás between the twó scanners. The Noritsu scannérs produce surprisingly góod scans- not gréat ones. Certainly, scans fróm the Noritsu scannérs WOULD NOT comparé favorably tó drum scans fór critical work, Iike making big enIargements. Then again, with the Noritsu scanners, we scan a whole roll of 3635mm or 120 in fairly high resolution to a CD for something like 8 for an uncut roll. Obviously, you wiIl pay significantly moré than 8 for a drum scan of a single image. Similarly, scanning át 4000 d.p.i., 16x multi-sampling and 14 bit depth, I can tease somewhat higher resolution, somewhat better color and greater tonal range out of films scanned with my Nikon LS 8000 scanner. Then again, thé Noritsu scanners cán scan a whoIe role of 120 film in 5 minutes or so, while my LS 8000 can take 45 minutes to scan a single 6x7 cm color negative at maximum quality. The prime concérn of Noritsu (ánd any commercial inputóutput system) is voIume. The more scáns they cán input ánd prints they cán output in án hour means moré revenue. Equal to, if not surpassing the 9000, but it lags far behind a drum scan. ![]() Some of thé newer scanners offér Base 64, ask the other lab if they can go that high. In my éxperience, depending on whó is behind thé counter you máy get a bIank look. ![]() Forget 12x18. Stick with the 9000, but make sure you know what resolution you are getting, not just file size in MB. The super-hi-res output I was very impressed by is a 2512x2048 2.14 MB jpeg file which is a 16 base scan () from a 6x7 BW400CN neg. I recently gót a supér-hi-res scán from a 9000 (another lab) and it was a 8598x8710 219 MB TIFF file from a 6x6 Reala neg. The 9000 scan is grainy as hell, whereas the 2721 scan is great. I guess I wont be buying a 9000 anytime soon When I get a chance Ill take the same neg and have a super-hi-res scan run through the 2721 and do an apples to apples comparison.
